Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway is due to release its third quarter stock portfolio 'snapshot' later today (Monday).
The 13F filing with the SEC will list Berkshire's holdings of U.S. publicly traded stocks as of September 30.
There are times, however, that Berkshire gets permission from the SEC to keep some holdings confidential, often as it is accumulating a position.
The second quarter's filing in mid-August specifically stated that "confidential information has been omitted from the public Form 13F and filed separately with the commission."
We may learn what that was about later today.
The Q2 public filing showed Berkshire doing more selling than buying, although Buffett's company did add a relatively small stake in the New Jersey-based medical technology company Becton Dickinson .
Berkshire also moderately increased its holdings of Johnson and Johnson
in both the first and second quarters of this year, building back from its massive money-raising sale of J&J shares in the fourth quarter of last year.
Buffett has said the sale helped raise funds for the fixed-income securities Berkshire bought from Wrigley, Goldman Sachs , and General Electric .
We should not expect to see any American Express stock purchases in today's filing.
