Sure you like his show, but what about his book? Peak inside the playbook of celebrity talk show titan, Regis Philbin.
As you may know, Regis Philbin is a big fan of Fast Money.
In fact, you might say over the past few months the gang and Reej have gotten kind of chummy -- at least when it comes to talking stocks.
On the news that he was taking time off for a hip replacement Guy Adami suggested Regis take a long position in Zimmer Holdings, a maker of artificial hips. (And Adami doesn’t hesitate to remind Regis that shares are up over 11% since he made the call in late November.)
However, this visit isn’t about hip replacements.
Like many of you, Philbin turns to the traders for guidance. And he really needs some guidance.
Regis Philbin’s Playbook
Long Time Warner (TWX)
Long EMC (EMC)
Long Pfizer (PFE)
Long LSI Corp. (LSI)
Long Advanced Micro Devices (AMD)
The problem is that Philbin established many of these long positions mentioned above as far back as 1998 as has been in the red ever since. "I've got a break even at 42 in Time Warner and it's nowhere near that," he says. Even dollar cost averaging isn't helping.
The traders have advice but in cases like this sometimes the medicine is tough to swallow.
"Considering you bought Time Warner as a play on the AOL merger I'd sell at a loss," explains Karen Finerman. "The thesis doesn't hold anymore. The same is true for the other names. If the thesis doesn't hold, and you think there are better opportunities elsewhere in the market put the capital to work elsewhere."
Maybe Regis isn't the most impressive trader on the planet. But he's a darn good talk show host.
And in case you’re wondering, upcoming guests on "Live!" include Kiefer Sutherland, Denzel Washington, Jeff Bridges, Harrison Ford, John Travolta and Ashley Judd. Now that is pretty impressive.
** Note that Regis Philbin told the desk about some of his holdings ahead of the broadcast.
