Survey Says: Two-Thirds of Organizations Worldwide Experience Success with Data Warehousing and Master Data Management Implementations Baseline-Consulting sponsors survey to explore link between data warehousing and master data management

LOS ANGELES, May 10, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Baseline Consulting, an acknowledged leader in information design and deployment to improve business performance and realize strategic objectives, today released the results of an international market survey designed to explore the link between data warehousing (DW) and master data management (MDM) initiatives in order to better understand the success rates of these initiatives for business.

"Despite the close relationship between MDM and DW, a glance at even the most recent literature on these topics reveals that these two important areas tend to be treated as entirely different," said Andy Hayler, CEO of The Information Difference Company which conducted the survey. "Against this backdrop, we were interested in exploring the linkage between master data and data warehouses as well as the scale and scope of the initiatives for business use." Key findings from the research study included the following: -- Almost half (46 percent) of organizations surveyed have one or more DW and MDM implementations. Relatively few (7 percent) had only MDM.

-- Encouragingly, 57 percent of MDM implementations are "enterprise-wide"; for DW's this number is 75 percent.

-- The MDM implementations surveyed manage a median of 4 million records; the biggest DW's are around 500 -- 800 terabytes in size with a mean size of 34 terabytes.

-- Two-thirds of organizations have data governance in place, showing an improvement over earlier studies.

-- Two-thirds consider their MDM and DW implementations to be at least moderately successful.

"This survey substantiates the symbiosis between data warehousing and MDM," said Jill Dyche, partner and co-founder of Baseline Consulting. "It's not surprising that companies with mature data warehouses are turning their heads to MDM to address data quality and reconciliation issues in a more sustainable way. What is surprising is that MDM is often adopted by data warehousing teams in advanced operational applications. This reconfirms that MDM and data governance are being deployed incrementally by the early adopters." More than 200 respondents completed the survey from companies worldwide. Over half of the respondents came from companies with annual revenues greater than $1 billion. To view the complete survey, go here.
