Fund Manager Derek van Eck Dies at 46


Fund Manager Derek van Eck, principal and director at Van Eck Associates, died unexpectedly Wednesday night at the age of 46.

Van Eck joined the firm, founded by his father John van Eck, in 1993 and served as chief investment officer. He managed the Van Eck Global Hard Assets Fund, Van Eck VIP Global Hard Assets Fund, and Van Eck’s long/short Hard Assets funds.

Colleagues Shawn Reynolds and Charles Cameron will assume management roles for Van Eck's portfolios.

After graduating from Williams College in 1986, Van Eck started his career with CS First Boston in the securities business. He then received his masters from Northwestern's J.L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management in 1993.

Van Eck is survived by his wife and two children, along with his parents and brother, Jan van Eck, who will continue as principal at Van Eck Associates.
