India Fashion Week 2011

The 2011 edition of India’s annual show stopper the Lakme Fashion Week Summer/Resort ended last week in the entertainment capital of Mumbai. Since it's that time of the year, when Indians celebrate Holi, the festival of colors, we thought it would be the perfect time to look at the colors and styles on display at India's biggest fashion event.

Accessory designer Malini Agarwalla shows off her wares. Seventy-eight designers from veterans Manish Malhotra and Rocky S, who have made a name dressing up Bollywood stars, shared the ramp for the first time with bold accessory designers and a handful of guest designers from Japan.

The show included elements of Indian folk music. The Indian fashion industry accounts for just 0.2% of the global fashion market but it's expected to grow at 10-15 percent annually.

A colorful traditional Indian wedding dress by Parvesh Jai. The cash-rich Indian wedding market has an estimated turnover of $20 billion.

Fashion designer Masaba Gupta got heads turning with an interesting take on the Indian turban. The designer is the daughter of former West Indies cricket star Vivian Richards and Indian actress Neena Gupta.

Designer Debarun Mukherjee featured cream and gold traditional Indian outfits. The organized market for fashion apparel in India, according to industry estimates, is upwards of $55 million.

A model draped in a sari designed by Satya Paul, who has re-invented the conventional Indian dress as a modern classic. Paul is a well-known name among the large Indian diaspora.

A model showcases 'Breathing Space', a creation by designer Eina Ahluwalia. Top-end designer wear is just 1% of the total fashion market in India, whereas it makes up 5% of the worldwide market.

One of the creations of the three Japanese designers on show at the Fashion week. Devastated by news of the earthquake, they put on a brave face.

Models walk the runway at the Sabyasachi Mukherjee show. A Confederation of Indian Industry–AT Kearney Report last year said the luxury goods market in India is set to touch $14.72 billion by 2015.

Designer Manish Malhotra with Bollywood actress Kareena Kapoor. Malhotra is one of the most sought-after costume designers for Indian films.

Designer Anita Dongre showcases Indian fabrics and weaves. Ethnic wear still makes up the bulk of Indian fashion.

Indian actor Zayad Khan walks the ramp for  Rocky S. A popular designer with Bollywood stars like Hrithik Roshan and Salman Khan, Rocky S. has also dressed  Beyoncé Knowles.

Accessory designer Eina Ahluwalia’s collection displayed gold jewelry. India is the world's second-largest consumer of gold, recently overtaken by China.

Designer Pria Kataria Puri featured more modern creations. Indian designers are increasingly competing with foreign brands such as Hugo Boss and Gucci who have recently entered the Indian market.
