North Carolina, the Tar Heel State, came in third this year with a competitive 1,539 points out of a possible 2,500, just 39 shy of the No. 2 spot (more on that in about an hour!).
Moving up from fourth place last year, the state has now made the top 10 in each of CNBC's five America's Top States for Business surveys.
This year, North Carolina managed to dramatically improve in two key categories — Cost of Doing Business and Infrastructure & Transportation. The state also hung onto its No. 3 position for the second year running in the Workforce category.
Yet despite the big overall move up in the rankings, North Carolina fell in three categories.
