Getting OWNed in Sun Valley

On day one, the jets landed, and the moguls descended upon the tiny resort town of Sun Valley for Allen & Company’s annual boondoggle.

The first few rounds of arrivals were a slow trickle up to the entrance of the Lodge. Disney’s brass – Bob Iger, Tom Staggs, and Anne Sweeney—were the first full team to arrive. Most of the notables arrived fashionably late. After the cameras stopped rolling, Facebook’s Sheryl Sandberg and eBay’s John Donahoe strolled up—but heads swiveled to see Salma Hayek in a silk sundress skipping out of the lodge, daughter in tow. Hayek’s husband, Francois Henri-Pinault is the chief executive of fashion house PPR and has regularly attended the conference.

One unidentifiable guest came in a Canadian tuxedo topped with a bandana. Investor Seth Klarman wore tube socks. And Discovery Communications CEO David Zaslav was rocking an urban cowboy button-down. More interesting perhaps, though, is who was in Zaslav’s caravan: Gayle King, Oprah’s right hand, giving away the surprise that Oprah would be the guest of honor. Rumor has it she will be interviewed by Charlie Rose or Tom Brokaw, both of whom were said to be in attendance.

We expect the conversation will address her career in daytime TV, and her decision to devote full-time efforts to OWN. Or how to avoid hangovers:  Oprah was one of the stalwarts closing down the Lodge’s Duchin Lounge Tuesday night, before the conference even began.
