DreamWorks chief Jeffrey Katzenberg said the company is not for sale and won't be taken private — yet.

"I don't think that's the opportunity for us right now," he told CNBC Thursday in brief comments during the Allen & Co. media conference in Sun Valley, Idaho. "All those things can be considered but right now, today, I think we’re in a very enviable position."

The animation studio Katzenberg co-founded with director Steven Spielberg and mogul David Geffen has long been the subject of sale rumors despite having several blockbuster hits in recent years including the "Shrek" franchise. A spinoff, "Puss In Boots," is set for release this summer while "Kung Fu Panda 2" was released in May.

Katzenberg said DreamWorks "is not for sale. It hasn’t been for sale. I love doing this. Our best years are ahead of us. It’s just the opposite. I’d rather figure out how to double down" on animation.
