CNBC Poll: Can the 'Green' Sector Provide More Jobs?

Back To Work - A CNBC Special Report

With job growth painfully slow, there's high hopes in some quarters that the "clean technology" sector will be one of those bucking the trend.

Roughly 26 percent of all clean tech jobs — the sector of the economy that produces goods and services with an environmental benefit — lie in manufacturing, compared to just 9 percent in the broader economy, according to a recent Brookings Institution report.

The report also concludes many metropolitan areas have been able to add jobs as a result of "green" initiatives, and almost all of these jobs pay better than the median wage for that urban area.

Some, however, are skeptical about the potential for green job creation and believe solutions to environmental problems are a drag on government budgets, corporate profits and consumers' wallets.
