It's been one heck of a news week: the freeing of Amanda Knox, the loss of Steve Jobs, the rise of OccupyEverything.
Let's lighten up a bit as we head out for the weekend. Enjoy what's odd, funny, and uniquely American.
GREETING CARDS FOR THE UNEMPLOYED
Another says on the cover, "When things are kinda gloomy, do as I do, stare into the heavens, breathe deeply and say..." (Find out what the card says when you open it by clicking here.)
The cards started getting noticed by the media last week, but Hallmark says they've been in stores since 2009. "The idea came from Hallmark shoppers who were asking for these cards to offer support to their friends or family going through a difficult time." The company points out the cards are made in America.
BRITNEY SLEPT HERE
The recent attempt to auction off a beachfront Malibu home hasn't created the quick sale the sellers hoped for. Maybe because it lacked star power! Now Premiere Estates Auction is planning an auction in Calabasas, California, of a house "recently inhabited by Britney Spears." The auction is November 11, with a minimum bid of $4,499,000, a 58 percent discount from the original asking price of $10.8 million. Chateau Sueños is a four-year-old home in a gated community were Spears lived for a time and "left behind her personal touch."
Ok...what exactly did she leave behind?
"According to a published report, Spears spent an estimated $700,000 on property upgrades including furniture, artwork and electronics, but also Venetian plaster walls and luxurious bathroom fixtures." Wonder what kind of taste Brit had.
IF YOU'RE TOO TIRED TO COOK AFTER YOM KIPPUR...
After a long day of fasting and atoning, who wants to cook? This is America! Not to worry! There is now an instant microwaveable kosher whole chicken. It's made by Empire Kosher, and all you do is pop it in the microwave for 20 minutes and, voila, dinner. I threw one into the office microwave for a test. As a good Lutheran girl I'm not really up on what's kosher, but I'm totally up on what's easy. It worked. Mmmm. The aroma blanketed the office, covering up the horrific smell of last week's burnt popcorn disaster.
RED WINE IS GOOD FOR THE HEART
We keep hearing how good red wine is for the heart. Here's one way to remember that when you aerate your next bottle. Or maybe not.
TAKE YOUR MIND OFF YOUR TROUBLES
Here's my new favorite addictive game: Akinator.com. It's a form of 20 questions which has an amazing knack for figuring out the most obscure famous figures from past and present. Thomas Aquinas, Bozo the Clown, Maria Bartiromo, Herm Cain — Akinator guessed them all. This game will not only take your mind off your troubles, it'll take your mind off your work, your marriage, your responsibilities. Play it in moderation. I have not.
IT IS YOUR DESTINY, LUKE
Best video of the week: a father videotapes his children watching "The Empire Strikes Back" as they learn the truth about Darth Vader. "Noooooooo!"
This video is proof you should NOT show your children the "Star Wars" films in numerical order, but start with the original trilogy first (Episodes IV-VI). Also, teach your children that no matter how much George Lucas has tweaked the first film since it first hit theaters in 1977, Han shot first.
