Bull Signs on Horizon, Says Nasdaq Chief

Fresh off reporting a record quarter, Nasdaq OMX Group CEO Robert Greifeld told the “Fast Money” team he’s seeing some bull signs on the horizon.

“I would say right now we’re seeing some increasing optimism and you can see that in the IPO market,” he said. “Clearly the market shut down in August into September. It’s opening up at this point in time.”

In just the last couple of weeks, the exchange operator has won some big names that plan to go public—Zinga, Groupon and TripAdvisor.

Nasdaq, which runs U.S. and Nordic markets, reported core profit that jumped 20 percent in the third quarter, meeting expectations, as volatile markets boosted trading volumes across the exchange operator’s spectrum of assets.

While that volatility helped boost business, Greifeld pointed out that this is the fourth quarter in a row where the firm has reported record earnings.

Nasdaq CEO: Increasing Optimism in IPOs

“So through thick and thin, good times and bad, we’ve been able to perform,” he said.

And he said Nasdaq doesn’t need a big merger to be successful. He called the firm’s now dropped hostile bid for NYSE Euronext “opportunistic.”

“In the last four years we have doubled our earnings” he said. “With that kind of strength, clearly our stand-alone strategy is working, it has worked, it will continue to work and we feel very secure.”
