Best Sectors to Survive the Fiscal Cliff: Analyst

A few sectors are poised to provide shelter and even growth amid worst-case fiscal cliff scenarios, Jeff Utz, Credit Suisse U.S. equity product manager, told CNBC on Wednesday.

“Utilities, health care, rails would tend to outperform. We actually think technology could outperform,” he said on “Fast Money.”

“They’re the only S&P sector with positive net cash position,” Utz added. “And interestingly, tech did outperform in the last recession, and we do think that enterprises are going to continue to spend money on productivity.”

Chances that the U.S. economy will experience the so-called fiscal cliff are about 15 percent, Utz said. If that happens, GDP could experience negative-5 percent growth, “and potentially negative-3 percent for Q2 before we eventually see a bit of a recovery in the fourth quarter of next year.”

“That’s not our base forecast, by the way,” he added.
