Microsoft announced Monday that it had selected Oct. 25 as the date for launch of Windows 8, its long awaited new operating system.
In a manner similar to Apple's cryptic product launch invites but without the same level of public fanfare, Microsoft sent an email to reporters requesting them to save the date for the event, scheduled in New York City. The invitation didn't give any other details.
Microsoft's CEO Steve Ballmer told The Seattle Times over the past weekend that he is confident the new operating system will be a success.
“You know, Windows 95 was certainly the biggest thing in the last 20 years until now. I think Windows 8 certainly surpasses it,” Ballmer said, according to The Seattle Times.
Microsoft is also expected to push their tablet, the Surface, at the event. The Surface is expected to go on sale near the end of October. (Read more: Move Over Apple—Microsoft Shows Off Own Tablet)
