UK's Osborne: unrealistic to cut government spending any faster

BIRMINGHAM, England, Oct 8 (Reuters) - British financeminister George Osborne said on Monday it would be unrealisticto cut the size of government faster than planned in hisflagship austerity programme.

"There are those who say we're cutting too slow .... I'm thechancellor (finance minister) who is cutting the size ofgovernment faster than anyone in modern times," Osborne told theannual Conservative Party conference in the English city ofBirmingham.

"We're reducing the size of government from almost 50percent of our national income to just 40 percent in just fiveyears. I just don't think it's realistic to cut a great dealfaster than that," he added.
