Adventist Medical Center Ranked #1 in Oregon for GYN Surgery

Among Nation's Best in Gynecologic Surgery for Two Consecutive Years

PORTLAND, Ore., Oct. 9, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Adventist Medical Center (AMC), is ranked number one in Oregon hospitals for Gynecological Surgery for the second year in a row. A report released by HealthGrades, the leading provider of information to help consumers make an informed decision about a physician or hospital, named AMC among the top 10 percent in the nation for gynecologic surgery and the recipient of the Gynecological Surgery Excellence Award. HealthGrades found that women who undergo gynecologic surgery at 5-Star rated hospitals, experience 56 percent fewer complications than lower-performing hospitals.

AMC, is one of only 461 hospitals to receive a 5-Star rating by HealthGrades. "Providing a safe environment where the patient comes first has been the goal at Adventist Medical Center," states Sharon Wong, MD, Chair of the department of Perinatal Surgery at AMC. "This designation means that women have access to some of the most innovative and life changing procedures right here in Portland. Being ranked number one in Oregon for GYN Surgery assures women that AMC is leading the way with clinical outcomes that meet or exceed national standards."

The hospital is known nationally for its outstanding clinical teams who in addition to providing traditional surgical options, also specialize in robotically assisted surgeries, which often result in more precise procedures, minimal scarring, less pain, faster recovery and fewer side effects.

"A clear disparity exists between the complication rates that occur at hospitals performing at lower levels for gynecologic surgery compared to those HealthGrades has identified as 5-Star hospitals," says Divya Cantor, MD, MBA, HealthGrades Senior Physician Consultant and author of the study. "Our goal is not only to arm female patients with up-to-date statistics on clinical outcomes as they research and select healthcare providers, but also to name the hospitals that are setting the national standard for gynecologic surgery."

Key findings of the HealthGrades 2012 Trends in Women's Health in American Hospitals report state that in the 19 states studied, 9.2 percent of women undergoing gynecologic surgery experienced an in-hospital complication. If all hospitals performed at the level of Adventist Medical Center, 37,711 of these complications could have potentially been prevented.

HealthGrades has also named Adventist Medical Center in the top 5 percent of hospitals nationwide for patient safety. The combination of being among the safest hospitals and ranked number one in Oregon for GYN surgery makes it a healthy choice for patients care.
