Celadon Group, Inc. & Celadon Trucking Services Receives US EPA 2012 SmartWay Excellence Award

Award Recipients are Top Program Performers and Leaders for Freight Supply Chain Efficiency

INDIANAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Celadon Group, Inc. (NYSE:CGI) today announced that Celadon Trucking Services has been honored with the 2012 SmartWay® Excellence Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as a true industry leader in freight supply chain environmental performance and energy efficiency. Celadon was one of 40 companies, representing fewer than one percent of the Partnerships’ nearly 3000 Partners, to receive this distinction. Celadon has been a staunch supporter of the SmartWay® Transport Partnership and its mission to improve freight supply chain sustainability and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution. Since becoming a SmartWay® partner in 2005, the company has reduced average emissions for carbon dioxide, oxides of nitrogen, and particulate matter by 21%, 57%, and 91%, respectively. In addition, the company estimates that its idle reduction initiatives and other fuel reduction strategies positively impact the environment by eliminating 11,000 gallons of fuel consumption daily.

“We’re extremely proud of our record with respect to SmartWay®,” stated Paul Will, Vice Chairman, President & COO. “We have a great team in place that clearly understands the importance of these initiatives and consistently strives for additional improvements through our testing and research program. This is our 3rd consecutive SmartWay® Excellence Award, and going forward, we will continue to be diligent in our efforts to save fuel, lower costs and reduce adverse environmental impacts.”

About SmartWay

EPA launched SmartWay in 2004 to help business improve the sustainability of their freight supply chains. Today the Partnership consists of nearly 3,000 Partners, representing a cross section of the freight supply chain industry. As of today, SmartWay Partners have saved 55 million barrels of oil. This is equivalent to taking over 3 million cars off the road for an entire year. SmartWay’s clean air achievements (23.6 million metric tons of carbon dioxide, 478,000 tons nitrogen oxides, and 22,000 tons of particulate matter reduced so far) help protect the health and well-being of citizens while contributing to our nation’s economic and energy security.
