Globe, NYT tech exec named top RI digital officer

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- A technology executive for the Boston Globe and New York Times Co. has been named Rhode Island's first chief digital officer.

Gov. Lincoln Chafee on Wednesday announced that Thom Guertin will start Oct. 22.

Guertin will oversee the new Office of Digital Excellence, which was created by the General Assembly to improve services available to Rhode Islanders through technology. The office is charged with undertaking initiatives including increasing the number of government services provided online and upgrading the state's technology.

Guertin is a Woonsocket native and graduated from the University of Rhode Island. He also a holds corporate finance certificate from Bryant University.

Guertin is currently executive director for business technology solutions at the Globe and New York Times. He helped launch job site Monster.com in the 1990s.
