Norman AS “Inside Network Security” Video Series Continues with Focus on Need to Protect Both Networks and Industrial Control Systems

Second Interview with Joe Weiss of Applied Control Systems Series Notes Threats to Networks Also Threaten Systems and Vice Versa

SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Norman AS, the global leader in threat discovery, malware forensics and analysis, and industrial control system protection solutions, today released the second episode of its new video series, “Inside Network Security: Cybercrime, Malware and Today’s Emerging Threats.”

This episode, titled “Avoiding Things That Go Boom in the Night,” is the second of a three-part interview with Joe Weiss, Managing Partner, Applied Control Solutions, and former IT Manager at the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI). The series is hosted by Darin Andersen, General Manager, North America for Norman AS.

In the interview, Weiss points out that whether it’s a car manufacturer, amusement park operator or power plant, how IT teams implement and manage an industrial controls system is approximately the same. If initiatives among security and IT teams can protect one industry, then “We are 80 percent of the way to securing all industries.” However, Weiss continues to note that today, no industry is secure.

He continues by reporting that within many organizations, security and IT teams are focused on protecting information networks, but must be equally concerned about control systems, which are somewhat more likely to have design issues that can affect security. He cites Stuxnet as an example, reminding viewers that Stuxnet exploited vulnerabilities inherent in the design of the control system.

“Joe raises the critical issue that several critical infrastructure failures, such as the 2003 Northeast power failure and Bellingham, Washington pipeline rupture, were physical systems that ‘went boom in the night,’” said Andersen. “Security and IT teams have since acted more aggressively to protect both information networks and control systems, based on the report findings after these incidents.”

Norman will release one new video per week on subjects related to cyber security, including threat discovery, malware analysis and approaches for remediation. This week’s video is available by visiting starting today.
