Yahoo appointed a former PayPal executive to its board of directors Thursday, while two other board members stepped down, the company said in a statement.

New board member Max Levchin is a computer scientist who also worked as a vice president of engineering at Google. Yahoo's CEO Marissa Mayer, also a former Google exec, said that Levchin will be a "tremendous asset" to the company.

"Max is someone I've admired throughout my career for his phenomenal sense for great products and keen focus on user experiences," Mayer said in a statement. "I'm confident that his strong product and technology expertise will be a tremendous asset to Yahoo! as we work to transform the world's daily habits."

Levchin serves as the chairman of the boards at Kaggle, Yelp and is a director at Evernote.

Two other board members, David Kenny and Brad Smith, stepped down so that they could focus on their own companies, according to Yahoo's statement.

With their departure and the addition of Levchin there are now 11 directors on the Yahoo board.
