RALEIGH, N.C., Sept. 19, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Local State Employees' Credit Union (SECU) volunteers were recently given the opportunity to visit a renovated Durham property, which is part of the revitalization efforts underway through SECU*Real Estate (SECU*RE) Property Management and the City of Durham. In July, SECU and the City of Durham signed a Pledge of Support to develop and implement a model for cooperation between the lender and the community, and to set a new standard of responsible stewardship regarding lender acquired properties in North Carolina neighborhoods. The restored property is located on Hibiscus Street.

On hand for the tour were Rick Hester and Constance Stancil of the City of Durham's Neighborhood Improvement Services, Sam Adams, SECU Senior Vice President (SVP) of SECU*RE, Warren Peacock, SECU SVP of Durham's Duke Street branch, Matthew Perkins, SECU VP of Durham's Guess Road branch and numerous Durham area SECU Advisory Board volunteers. Renovations to the Hibiscus Street property included energy efficient upgrades and overall interior and exterior improvements to help create a safe and welcoming area for renters and homeowners. SECU*RE worked with community partners to repair the homes, and restorations are currently underway to neighboring properties.

"I am happy to have had this opportunity," said SECU Durham Guess Road Advisory Board Chair, Gail Perry. "Any SECU member should be proud to be part of a financial cooperative that not only helps us on a personal level but is now reaching out into the community to preserve families and build communities."
