Ron Paul: GOP is 'not serious' about spending cuts

Ron Paul says his fellow Republicans aren't as committed to cutting government spending as it may seem.

The Republicans "are putting the money back in the budget in the continuing resolution for the military expenditures. So you know they're not serious," the former congressman said on Tuesday's "Futures Now." "Neither side is serious about cutting back. They're just trying to bamboozle the American people into believing that you have to keep spending forever."

Paul says that the Republican Party's lack of focus has sapped the power of their anti-Obamacare arguments.

When it comes to Obamacare, "Why in the world can't you have the chance to opt out when corporations can opt out and the government can opt out? That is such a hot political issue. Why can't people have the right to take care of themselves?" Paul said. "I think that's a message that could be sold, but right now they're all over the place, and at the same time they talk about saving money, they don't really believe that the government shouldn't be involved in medicine."

Paul thinks the major issue isn't party politics, but public expectations.

"The only thing that really counts is what the American people think the role of government ought to be," Paul said, noting "a belief that the government can take care of us forever and ever with deficits, which I think is absolutely wrong."

At the end of the day, a government shutdown shouldn't worry the American people, Paul said. "It's a breakdown of the whole system that they ought to be concerned with."
