Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) sent a letter to House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) offering budget talks, and the two spoke by phone on Wednesday.
But the conversation, which Reid called "cordial," did not lead to any sort of deal on the government shutdown. Senate Democrats want the House to pass a bill to fund the government without any preconditions, while the House has tied any funding bill to defunding Obamacare.

"There needs to be a path forward to reopen the Government and protect our economy," Reid said in his letter.
"I propose that you allow this joint resolution to pass, reopening the government. And I commit to name conferees to a budget conference, as soon as the government reopens," the letter said. "Together we can end this government shutdown and work to address the important fiscal issues facing our nation."
