INDIANAPOLIS, Nov. 4, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- For Blood Management Awareness Week, Strategic Healthcare Group (www.bloodmanagement.com) highlights the individual and cumulative success of its hospital clients in saving blood and patient lives through comprehensive blood management and transfusion safety programs. Since 2007, Strategic Healthcare Group clients have reduced red blood cell (RBC) utilization by 268,665 units while saving an estimated 2,857 patient lives. This mortality reduction is based upon published National Surgical Quality Improvement Program data,1 which also estimates 12,697 wound complications were avoided and 476,132 inpatient days reduced.

The following clients deserve special recognition for their significant savings: University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital has reduced RBC utilization by 83,049 units and plasma use by 43,644 units; The University of Kansas Hospital reduced platelets by 4,112 units; Meridian Health has saved an estimated 35,900 nursing hours; John Muir Health reduced inpatient days by an estimated 31,358 days and Advocate Health Care saved an estimated 797 lives, all by reducing unnecessary and inappropriate transfusions.

Although blood can be a lifesaving resource, current evidence suggests a more conservative approach to transfusions is better for patients because it minimizes the risk of complications including death.

Strategic Healthcare Group was the first company to help hospitals improve blood utilization through clinical change management using evidence-based education and benchmarking data. SHG Founder and Chief Medical Officer Timothy Hannon, MD, MBA, a noted expert in blood management, and his team of clinical consultants lead hospitals to transform their transfusion practices.

"We help hospital leadership understand how impactful a comprehensive blood management program is on patient safety. It is a hospital-wide, multi-disciplinary approach to rapidly drive sustainable change in transfusion practices," says Dr. Hannon. "In recognition of Blood Management Awareness Week, we wanted to highlight the efforts of those organizations that are truly saving blood and saving lives."

To celebrate Blood Management Awareness Week, Strategic Healthcare Group offers these examples of tools they provide to help hospitals communicate the importance of blood management: "The Bloody Truth: 10 Facts About Blood Transfusions" infographic, handout and on-demand webinar, available now through November 9. http://www.BloodManagement.com/DownloadTheBloodyTruth
