GREENSBORO, N.C., Nov. 5, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Prophecy Healthcare, Inc., a firm specializing in holistic, online nurse testing solutions, today brings the first validated video-based situational judgment tests (SJT) for pre-employment testing to the healthcare industry. The patient simulation series' aid hiring managers in understanding how candidates among a group compare to each other. Having instantly scoring validated tools to select top applicants takes the guesswork out of hiring and improves hospital retention.

"We are very proud of what we have created with these innovative video SJTs. Prophecy pinpointed the high risk areas in hospitals, and created video-based scenarios that would test a candidate's response, to those critical situations," shared Ron Gonzalez, Founder and CEO of Prophecy Healthcare. "By adding this new assessment series, we provide a solution that will help hospitals identify & hire a top performing workforce. This workforce will learn quicker, turnover less, stay longer, communicate effectively, and help improve patient satisfaction."

Created in partnership with Biddle Consultant Group, Inc., national leaders in Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) consulting, litigation support, personnel testing software development, and Affirmative Action Plan (AAP) outsourcing and software, over 100 subject matter experts participated in the content validity study involving the use of these situational judgment tests. With over 65 video vignettes for three nursing specialties, Medical/Surgical, Intensive Care Unit, and Labor & Delivery, the clinical competence video SJT boast specificity, meaning that the competencies being assessed are highly specific to a particular patient care arena. Characteristics such as body language, tone of voice, and environmental factors, parallel the actual scenarios and environments in which nurses interact with patients every day.

Filming took place in a large community hospital in the Northeast (700+ beds) ensuring the realistic setting and modality of testing is second to none. The video vignettes convey non-verbal communication cues, interpersonal behaviors, and critical thinking opportunities that are not present in paper/pencil examinations.

"The advanced video situational judgment tests are a great follow up to the original 'Situational' video test. They allow organizations to probe more deeply into the decision-making abilities of their applicants, incumbents and candidates in a more-advanced job context," said Michael Callen, VP of Products with Biddle Consultant Group, Inc. "As with the original series of items, the video format allows for the highest of fidelity in terms of test presentation available in a self-scoring software environment."

Prior to the launch of the new video SJT, Prophecy's nurse testing trilogy of assessments included:

  • Clinical Job Knowledge Assessments that identify if the applicant has the fundamental clinical hard knowledge needed to provide safe and effective patient care. Within this portion of Prophecy there are over 180 exams with department specific exams covering all nursing areas as well as most of allied health positions.
  • Situational Interpersonal Competence Tests that identify if the applicant has the fundamental soft-skills needed for successful patient and peer interaction. This video-based situational judgment test poses difficult or tricky situations that occurs on the job and asks the applicants to identify the most effective and least effective way to handle the situation.
  • Behavioral Attribute Assessment that identify applicants possessing fundamental behaviors needed to complement the established organizational culture allowing hospitals to identify the clinicians with behavioral characteristics that predict high performance and match them to departments that best fit their personality traits. In addition this piece measures engagement and flags potential disruptive behaviors that may occur on the job.

Combining the Prophecy Clinical job knowledge exams with the video-based situational clinical competence assessment provides hiring managers with a more holistic view of each candidate/applicant. Prophecy's nurse testing solution provides data to outline hiring decisions for hospitals looking to employ top performing workforces focused on positive patient outcomes.
