MarginProbe(R) System Wins Prestigious Popular Science Magazine Best of What's New Award

Dune Medical Devices

WESTBOROUGH, Mass., Nov. 13, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Dune Medical Devices announced today that the MarginProbe System has been awarded the Best of What's New Award from Popular Science Magazine in the Health category, and is featured in the magazine's December issue hitting newsstands on November 12, 2013.

It is estimated that 30 to 60 percent of early-stage breast cancer patients who have an initial lumpectomy procedure will undergo a repeat surgery.i This is because only several days after the surgery, when the histopathology report becomes available, cancerous cells can be found to be present on the rim or edge of the removed tissue, increasing the possibility that cancer still remains in the breast. The MarginProbe System addresses this problem by providing real-time data to surgeons on the condition of the edge of the removed tissue using near field RF-Spectroscopy. In doing so, the MarginProbe significantly improves the surgeons' ability to intra-operatively identify "cancer on the margin" and significantly reduce pathologically positive margins following a patient's initial lumpectomy surgery.

"We are thrilled to receive this honor recognizing our work to improve the standard of care in breast cancer surgery," said Dan Hashimshony, Ph.D, Founder and CEO of Dune Medical Devices. "We are working tirelessly to improve the surgical outcome for women undergoing a lumpectomy, and the Best of What's New Award recognizes the groundbreaking potential of this first-of-its-kind device."

Each year, Popular Science reviews thousands of new products and innovations, and chooses the top 100 winners across 12 categories for its annual Best of What's New issue. To win, a product or technology must represent a significant step forward in its category. All of the winners will be featured in the December special issue of the magazine.

"For more than a quarter century, Popular Science has devoted its December issue to the year's most remarkable innovations," said Cliff Ransom, Executive Editor of Popular Science Magazine. "The Best of What's New Award is our magazine's top honor, and the 100 awardees are selected from a pool of thousands. Each winner is handpicked and revolutionary in it's own way. Whether they're poised to change the world or simply your living room, the Best of What's New awardees challenge us to the see the future in a new light."
