Major storms and hurricanes often cause billions of dollars in damage and a big loss in lives, as we most recently saw in the Philippines in the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan.
The reality of it is sea levels have risen and the possibility of these storms has also grown, according to Paul Walsh of The Weather Channel.
A 2013 CoreLogic Storm Surge analysis found that given a one-foot rise in the sea level, total properties at risk would nearly double.
According to CoreLogic, there are more than 4 million residential homes exposed to storm-surge risk, with more than half of that risk within 10 major metro areas.
Florida and Louisiana top the list as the states most exposed to a storm surge, according to CoreLogic.
Citing a 2012 MIT/Princeton study, Walsh told Big Data Download, that the combined effects of changes in storm intensity and tracks that may occur as a result of climate change could cause the present-day 100-year surge event in New York to now occur once every three to 20 years by 2100.
