Planning to travel by air over the holidays? There's at least one way to save some money on bookings as Christmas and New Year's Day draw closer.
Picking the right days to travel can often result in savings of more than $100, according to data from Orbitz.com.
During Christmastime, which Orbitz.com considers the period between Dec. 20 and Dec. 28, round-trip airfares are up 8.6 percent year-over-year. And ticket prices for travel between Dec. 28 and Jan. 2, have gone up 2.4 percent.
"The day really to avoid is Dec. 21," said Jeanenne Tornatore, senior travel editor at Orbitz.com. "That's what we're seeing is the most expensive travel day."
The average domestic round-trip ticket with departure on that day is about $591, compared with the average round-trip with travel on Christmas Eve for about $408, according to the travel booking site.
For New Year's travelers, roundtrip tickets with a departure date of Dec. 28 are the most expensive. Travelers leaving that day will pay $513 on average for a domestic roundtrip ticket, versus $353 for a roundtrip flight departing on New Year's Eve, Orbitz.com found.
