COLUMBUS, Ohio, Dec. 17, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Columbus, Ohio based Language Access Network (LAN), the industry leader in trusted healthcare communications, has opened its newest language center in Portland, OR, bringing LAN's centers to a total of five nationwide. In the centers, via live video, the most highly trained interpreters in the industry help break language barriers that often hinder quality medical care.

"LAN interpreters are the most highly skilled in the industry and Portland is widely-known for having among the most proficient interpreters in the country, so it made sense for us to tap those resources as we continue our rapid expansion nationally," explains Andrew Panos, LAN's Chief Operations Officer.

Serving hospitals throughout the country, it is imperative for LAN to have highly trained medical interpreters, in a HIPAA compliant setting, to connect with Limited English Proficient, Deaf and Hard of Hearing patients and their medical providers through Martti (My Audio Real-Time Trusted Interpreter), LAN's state-of-the-art video interpretation system.

LAN interpreters are employees of the company and must meet very rigorous prerequisite requirements as well as ongoing training. All complete "Bridging the Gap," a 40-hour medical interpretation training. Additionally, LAN was the first in the industry to require interpreters to be either CCHI (Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters) or NBCMI (National Board for the Certification of Medical Interpreters) certified. All American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters require RID (Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf). LAN has served as a proctoring location for CCHI certification for several years and was recently tapped to proctor for RID.
