The smellier side of more online shopping

The holiday season is synonymous with excess: a sharp uptick in gifts, eating and even trash, the Wall Street Journal reports.

In recent years, increased online shopping has fueled a rise in trash production around this time of year in the U.S.

During the holidays, the Environmental Protection Agency estimates that people generate about 25 percent more waste.

"You can tell people are buying more things online, as there are already a lot of Amazon and FedEx boxes," said one sanitation worker, whom the Journal interviewed.
