Hollywood had a record year at the box office.
With a final push from the holiday weekend that generated $201.3 million in reported grosses, 2013's total should hit $11 billion, surpassing last year's record-setting $10.8 billion.
Although movie theater attendance is down 3 percent, the average ticket rose to $8.38 from $7.96 a year ago. The price hike is largely because of 3-D and IMAX surcharges, which often add $3 to $5 to a ticket.
Entertainment available on countless portable devices continues to threaten multiplex attendance, as do advanced home theater systems and video-on-demand services offering original premium programming and feature films the same day as theatrical releases.
