CHARLOTTE, N.C., Jan. 9, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Mathematica Policy Research has partnered with Premier, Inc. (Nasdaq:PINC) to create and implement a national learning system for accountable care organizations (ACOs).

Last spring, Mathematica worked with Premier to submit a proposal to the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (CMS Innovation Center) to develop a national learning system for Pioneer and Medicare Shared Savings Program ACOs, as well as future End Stage Renal Disease Seamless Care Organizations. The Innovation Center awarded the contract for the ACO Learning System to the project team led by Mathematica.

Premier is Mathematica's lead content partner for the Pioneer ACO work in the project, providing thought leadership, curriculum development, and educational materials. The Innovation Center's Pioneer program includes some of the most advanced ACOs in the country. The program is designed for providers that are experienced in coordinating care across the continuum and are interested in progressing from volume-based payment systems to a value-based payment approach.

"Mathematica's research, evaluation and project management skills coupled with Premier's deep educational resources and an outstanding team of seasoned ACO specialists is a powerful assembly of intelligence to meet the needs of Pioneer ACOs," said Wes Champion, senior vice president of Premier Performance Partners. "This project is closely related to many of the initiatives we have all been working on for several years. It offers our team an important opportunity to work with the Innovation Center to apply our knowledge in developing curriculum, implementing shared learning vehicles, and disseminating useful information to support the Pioneer program."

Premier has extensive knowledge of the clinical, financial, operational and strategic components required to develop and implement successful ACOs as a result of the organization's one-on-one consulting experience and lessons learned from its PACT™ Population Health Collaborative. PACT helps hospitals and health systems improve the health status and care experience of their populations.
