And it seems that Pope Francis' appeal is transatlantic, with retailers in the U.S. reporting similar trends. In some cases, sales of papal merchandise almost doubled.
California-based Café Press offers pink Pope Francis "onesies" retailing at £48 each.
The "Francis effect" isn't just limited to apparel. Calendars, key rings, mugs and baseball caps are just some of the themed merchandise available on the market. Fans are even able to buy papal-themed hoodies for their dogs.

Other items include the emergence of Pope Francis cocktail shakers, wine chillers and shot glasses. His most ardent fans are also able to purchase toiletary bags, mouse mats, iPad and Kindle sleeves, biscuit jars, wall clocks and jigsaws.
The uptick in sales of papal-themed merchandise is indicative of the pope's growing popularity across the globe.
"We are hearing quotes from the Pope all the time", Barry Flynn a spokesman for Catholics With Attitude told the Catholic Herald.
"The pope is grabbing their interest and people are listening to what he has to say."
