Long-running protests in Kiev exploded into violence this week, as protesters opposed to President Viktor Yanukovych began a running fight with riot police in the city's Independence Square.
As NBC News' Richard Engel reported this week, some protesters in the square left their barricades and moved on police positions; shortly afterward on Wednesday and especially Thursday, the death toll in Kiev rose precipitously, with at least 77 people reported killed.
The following amateur video, shot by a protester on a cellphone and provided to CNBC, shows fighting between protesters and police as it began to intensify late Tuesday night local time. Some of the footage is violent.
