WATERTOWN, Mass., March 6, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- athenahealth, Inc.(Nasdaq:ATHN), a leading provider of cloud-based services for electronic health record (EHR), practice management, and care coordination, today formally announced plans to expand in Austin, Texas. As part of the expansion, athenahealth will redevelop an approximately 110,000-square-foot space located at the iconic Seaholm Power Plant in Austin's downtown. The redevelopment, expected to be completed in mid-2014, will include new restaurant space, a coffee shop, and indoor and outdoor public space, as well as four floors of open, creative office space.
The Austin expansion is part of athenahealth's national growth strategy and will enable the company to better serve its growing national client base across health care. Over the next ten years, the company plans to add approximately 600 software development and research and development (R&D) jobs in Austin, as well as invest approximately $13 million to support the office's expansion and its growing team of employees. The newly expanded office will serve as a flagship R&D site, housing high-caliber developers, user experience designers, and project managers who have a desire and competency to improve health care through innovation.
"As we work to pursue our vision to become the nation's health information backbone, we are expanding in markets across the country," said Leslie Brunner, senior vice president of people and process, athenahealth. "Putting a stake in the ground in Austin is a logical and inspiring choice. Austin offers athenahealth everything it could ask for in a city—it's among the top tech hubs in the country, provides an unrivaled culture of innovation and creativity, and is home to some of the best talent that health care and technology have to offer. We look forward to growing our presence in Austin and paving the way for more disruptive innovation that will help health care work as it should."
