"Answering Lincoln's Call" Seventh Regiment Marches to Defend Washington

NEW YORK, April 16, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- On April 19, 2014, the Veterans of the Seventh Regiment of New York will commemorate the 153rd anniversary of the Seventh Regiment's famous march to the defense of Washington. All participants will assemble at 9:00 AM, at the Park Avenue Armory at 66th Street and Park Avenue. A military service will begin at 10:30 AM at the Seventh Regiment Civil War Monument located near the W 70th Street entrance to Central Park. Following this service, the participants will return to the Armory, where guest speaker, Thomas Fleming, will speak about leadership and brotherhood throughout this painful period.

Following its tour of defense in Washington, then-Union Commanding General Winfield Scott exhorted the Seventh men to return to New York and obtain Commissions in the new Regiments being formed. Six hundred did. Three rose to the rank of major general; nineteen to the rank of Brigadier general; twenty-nine to Colonel and forty-six to Lt. Colonel. Seven earned the Medal of Honor and sixty died in the War. The Seventh provided more officers in the Civil War than West Point, earning the title of 'West Point of the National Guard.'
