Has 'sell in May' had its day?

The well-known trading adage "sell in May and go away" may have already run its course this year, with global markets posting steep year-to-date losses.

Both the Dow Jones Industrial Average and London's FTSE 100 are down 1 percent, while Japan's Nikkei is over 12 percent lower.

Investors traditionally shed their stock holdings in May, which marks the start of a typically volatile trading period that lasts until November.
