UBIC Obtains Patent on Its Predictive Coding Technology in Japan

TOKYO, May 19, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- UBIC, Inc. (Nasdaq:UBIC) (TSE:2158), a leading provider of international litigation support and big-data analysis services, announced today its artificial intelligence (AI)-based predictive coding technology, which powers the company's Virtual Data Scientist software and other data analysis tools integrated into its Lit i View® data management and analysis platform, was granted a patent in Japan.

Patent 5526209, granted April 18, 2014 by the Japan Patent Office, covers UBIC's unique AI-based technology, which makes it possible for the company to provide next-generation data analysis solutions that quickly and accurately identify useful business information from within very large volumes of disparate data, a capability often referred to as Big Data analysis. UBIC applied for the patent in 2012.

"UBIC is a technology innovator," Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Masahiro Morimoto said. "As much as this patent recognizes the uniqueness and power of UBIC's Predictive Coding technology, it is also a recognition of UBIC's development capabilities.

"We will continue to research and to develop our patented AI-based Predictive Coding technology and, where appropriate, acquire complementary intellectual property in order to expand its application potential," Mr. Morimoto said.

Current applications for UBIC's Predictive Coding technology include high-speed document review for legal discovery in litigation, also large-scale forensic investigations looking into fraud, cartel and other similar matters, and information risk management compliance-based monitoring and investigation including email auditing in large organizations.

New fields and industries for UBIC's technology include medicine and health care, the evaluation of intellectual property and national security.
