Tastes like chicken: Extreme cuisine

Most of us eat simply to stave off hunger. However, there are people who are more adventurous and view food as a portal to the unusual and the exotic. When it comes to creating that portal, award-winning chef Tim Love knows plenty.

The owner of such famous Texas restaurants as Lonesome Dove Western Bistro, Love serves such unusual items as wild boar, kangaroo and rattlesnake. He described those dishes to CNBC as "very exciting stuff… wild game which most people don't like to play with."

Of course, even people who order "very exciting stuff" have their limits, and there is cuisine throughout the world that will allow them to see exactly what those limits are. It's called "extreme cuisine," and even a chef who's seen it all and tasted it all might have second thoughts about eating it.

Read ahead to see CNBC.com's list of dishes from around the world that will put even the heartiest and most intrepid diner to the test.
