Chinese President Xi Jinping called for a "revolution in energy" in June as rising demand for electricity and fuel threatens to worsen the country's severe pollution levels.
China became the world's largest energy producer in 2007, thanks to its heavy coal production. In 2010, it became the biggest energy consumer, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.
As a result, the mainland releases more energy-related carbon dioxide than any other nation, about one-fourth of total global emissions.
