Security Benefit Thanks Topeka Police Department With Five-Year Gift of Body-Worn Cameras

TOPEKA, Kan., July 10, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Security Benefit, a leader in the U.S. retirement savings market, today announced a $75,000 gift over five years to the Topeka Police Department. The donation is part of Security Benefit's pledge to "protect our protectors" by supporting local law enforcement.

Michael Kiley, CEO of Security Benefit Corporation, presented the gift to Topeka police Chief Ron Miller and Topeka City Manager Jim Colson during yesterday's Topeka Police Department's Annual Awards Ceremony at the Law Enforcement Center. The gift will be used over the next five years to expand the police department's inventory of body-worn cameras that capture a wide-angle, full-color view of what an officer is facing. The five-year gift follows Security Benefit's 2013 contribution of 19 bulletproof vests to graduating cadets of the Topeka Police Academy.

"Last year we started a new tradition of demonstrating that appreciation with an annual contribution to support you on the job. For the past few months, we've been working with Chief Miller and the City to focus our efforts on equipment that enhances the safety and effectiveness of our police officers. This cutting edge technology serves to protect both officers and civilians," said Kiley in a speech after presenting the gift.

"Topeka benefits from the quality and generosity of its corporate citizens," said Colson. "An example of that is demonstrated in Security Benefit making this donation. As an organization, we continually strive to exceed our residents' expectations in performance and service. This particular grant allows us to assist our police officers in achieving that goal."

"Body-worn video cameras for police officers is an important emerging technology in the U.S. today," said Miller. "Community partnerships in acquiring these video systems benefit the entire community."

The funding for the cameras, which are secured to an officer's sunglasses, collar or head mount, was provided by the Security Benefit Charitable Trust. Each year, the Security Benefit Charitable Trust provides financial contributions to local social service agencies, supports educational efforts and works to improve the quality of life within the Topeka community.
