Spotify finally rolls out updates for Windows phone app

Spotify has finally gotten around to updating its app on Microsoft's Windows phone to support ad-supported free music streaming.

Of course if you use an Apple iPhone or an Android device, you had access to this freemium service since December.

Until now Spotify premium, the company's paid service, was available on Windows devices only for a monthly subscription fee of $9.99. Now users of the device can finally listen to music via the shuffle play option.

It's not surprising Spotify took its time getting around to updating its app for the Windows device. Microsoft smartphones account for a much smaller percentage of the smartphone market than iOS or Android devices.

According to Gartner, Android devices accounted for 78.4 percent of smartphone sales worldwide last year. Apple's iPhones made up 15.6 percent of market share, and Windows smartphone made up only 3.2 percent.
