Box-office record rocks the Twitter world

One billion tweets are sent on Twitter every 2.5 days. One hundred hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute. There are now more than 1 trillion posts on Facebook.

There is no denying social media's ever-growing popularity.

But what exactly is being shared? Is it possible to make sense of all the social noise? And, most importantly, are most of these posts just selfies?

CNBC teamed up with Mashwork, a social media insights firm, to dive into the data surrounding the entertainment world to see what was hot, and what was not, in August.

Surprisingly, it wasn't just selfies and viral posts from celebrities.
