STMicroelectronics Selected by SmarDTV to Power Its Set-Top-Box Line-Up in NAGRA QuickStart Solutions

GENEVA, Sept. 9, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- STMicroelectronics (NYSE:STM), a global semiconductor leader serving customers across the spectrum of electronics applications and a leading supplier of set-top-box SoCs, announced that it has been selected by SmarDTV, a subsidiary of the Kudelski group and a leading supplier of devices to Pay-TV operators worldwide, to power a range of set-top-boxes that are used in NAGRA pre-integrated QuickStart solutions.

SmarDTV has chosen ST decoders for its SmarBOX product range, which will benefit from the performance, power efficiency, and built-in support for the latest NAGRA technologies such as OpenTV 5 connectware and the NOCS3 hardware root-of-trust, enabling the new NAGRA anyCAST Security Services Platform:

  • SmarBOX OTT (Over-The-Top) platform, powered by the STiH207;
  • SmarBOX Hybrid Satellite platform, powered by the STiH237;
  • SmarBOX Media Server platform, powered by the STiH310/Cannes and STiH410/Monaco.

"ST's system-on-chip architecture delivers performance advantages over alternative devices and built-in support for the OpenTV 5 HTML5 Connectware solution and the MediaLive Multiscreen service, as well as the latest NAGRA NOCS3 CAS (Conditional Access System) technology support on their whole product portfolio, were critical factors that directed us toward ST decoder solutions," said Cedric Hardouin, Vice-President of Engineering, SmarDTV. "ST supports OpenTV 5 across its complete range of chipsets, which not only helps achieve timely project completion, but also provides the best possible assurance that we can deliver future projects quickly and cost-effectively."

NAGRA QuickStart solutions are based on the latest NAGRA technologies including NAGRA anyCAST content security, OpenTV 5 HTML5 connectware, and Gravity Edge User Experience, as well as the NAGRA MediaLive and Cloud Services platform. With this cooperation, SmarDTV gets access to ST's broad set-top-box system-on-chip family, which offers extensive hardware and software compatibility between the family members, allowing equipment manufacturers to create multiple products optimized for various market segments quickly and cost-effectively.

"The selection of our SoCs by SmarDTV for the NAGRA QuickStart solutions reflects the technical and commercial advantages of ST set-top box solutions," said Hervé Mathieu, Box and Gateways Business Line Director, Unified Platform Division, STMicroelectronics. "Our approach is to provide SoCs for building high-performance, competitively priced set-top boxes addressing all market segments, from basic hybrid zappers to Media Gateway and latest HEVC Connected Zapper powered by our STiH301. We look forward to continuing to work actively with SmarDTV to support their Pay-TV customers."

Notes to Editors:

The STiH207 decoder, which is based on the well-proven ST40, enables support for H.264 broadcast services including premium live channels, as well as Video On Demand (VOD) and connected-TV services. The STiH207 is pin-to-pin and software compatible with ST's STiH237 (featuring an integrated DVB-S2 satellite demodulator).

The STiH301(Liege2) raises the bar in entry- and mid-range broadcast set-top boxes and Internet Protocol (IP) clients by integrating a powerful ARM® Cortex®-A9 processor that delivers performance of up to 4000 DMIPS, a powerful GPU, and introduces a Full HD HEVC Connected Zapper decoder.

The Cannes client-box SoC family (STiH310/STiH312) delivers high computing capabilities based on ARM multi-core processors, superior 2D/3D graphics performance, integrated hardware video encoders with pre-processing, and ST Faroudja®-enhanced video processing.

STiH310 and STiH312 support a wide range of video standards (including H.264 and HEVC) and enable a new generation of cost-optimized set-top boxes that allow operators to deliver services with reduced bandwidth utilization, including best-in-class solutions for HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding) HD and UHD (Ultra High Definition) content.

The Monaco family (STiH410/STiH412) provides an economical yet full-featured solution for server-type applications such as home gateways, thanks to the ST Faroudja Transcode Engine providing best-in-class transcoding capabilities for multi-screen experiences across consumer and handheld devices.
