The man who put Instagram on the social media map has landed a new side gig—as a member of Wal-Mart's board.

The retail giant announced on Monday that Kevin Systrom, who co-founded the photo sharing service, was appointed to its board of directors.

Systrom's appointment takes effect immediately, Wal-Mart said, adding that he would also serve on the company's committees on technology, compensation, eCommerce and governance.

Wal-Mart Chairman Rob Walton said in a statement that the company "is investing in e-commerce capabilities through talent, technology and fulfillment. Kevin's passion and deep knowledge of social media align with our focus to engage customers through our digital and physical channels. "

Instagram was bought out by Facebook two years ago. The 30-year-old Systrom remains the company's CEO.
