Family Affair: Rise of the Mittelstand

Name: Warburtons
Founded: 1876
Location: Bolton, U.K.
Employees: 4,500 +

It was during a slump in the grocery market that store owners Thomas and Ellen Warburton first started baking. Within two weeks, the shop was renamed Warburtons the Bakers. The couple's original store, in Bolton, Lancashire, is still owned by Warburtons.

Nearly 140 years later, the company is run by the fifth generation of Warburtons. More than 4,500 employees work in 12 bakeries and 13 depots, producing more than two million products – from sliced bread to rolls, wraps and hot cross buns – every single day.

Today, Warburtons produces a quarter of the U.K.'s total wrapped bakery market, which is worth more than £2.8 billion ($4.46 billion) a year.
