The surge in art prices has been an especially male phenomenon. But now, female artists are gaining ground.
Sotheby's just sold Georgia O'Keeffe's iconic flower painting "Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1" for $44,405,000, or more than three times the previous world auction record for any female artist.
The prior record was $11.9 million, set by Joan Mitchell's "Untitled" at Christie's New York in May 2014.
The O'Keeffe piece sold for nearly three times its high estimate of $15 million, with seven bidders competing fiercely through the sale. It's one of O'Keeffe's famous series of flower paintings, which have become well-known throughout culture and the art world.
