There's been an awakening: Star Wars trailer drops

After weeks of fanboy imitations, the official trailer for "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" was released Friday morning.

The 88-second trailer saw its global introduction on Apple's iTunes (along with movie theaters), instead of Google's YouTube platform that many studios utilize for trailer releases.

Disney purchased the "Star Wars" franchise when it acquired Lucasfilm for $4 billion in 2012. In 2013 the studio announced that it had tapped J.J. Abrams—who rebooted the "Star Trek" franchise in 2009—to direct the seventh installment of the series.

The movie, which will be released in December 2015, will include some of the actors from the original trilogy, but also many new faces, the studio has said.

The film is so hotly anticipated that one cineplex in Austin had a stand-alone theater showing the teaser 17 consecutive times on Friday, according to Time.
