EINDHOVEN, The Netherlands, Dec. 22, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- NXP Semiconductors N.V. (Nasdaq:NXPI) today unveiled the winning applications for the NFC Windows Application Contest (NFC-WAC) launched together with Microsoft Corp., Identiv and Lenovo earlier this year. From healthcare to gaming applications, the contest revealed a number of potential practical use cases for near field communications (NFC) in computing and on tablets. Professional developers and students alike were invited to share their ideas for developing NFC applications for PCs and tablets running Windows 8 or Windows 8.1. Over one hundred viable ideas from participants all over the world were submitted during the initial phase of the competition, with over 80 individuals or groups being enabled with dedicated NFC development kits.
Five winners were selected by a panel of experts from NXP and our sponsor Lenovo, one of the world's leading personal technology companies producing innovative PCs and mobile internet devices. The winning applications were judged on a number of criteria, such as creativity, maturity of the application and the potential for the application to boost the use of NFC in the computing and tablet segment.
Below is an overview of the winning applications developed for the NFC Windows Application Contest:
- Meds Reminder (Australia) – using NFC tags this application sends notifications to the patient for medical alerts and compliance to prescriptions. The NFC tag holds all the necessary personalized information for the patient's medicinal requirements – start date/time, frequency, dosage and medicine name, and can be input into the tag by the patient or the doctor's office. This information can then be transferred to the patient's NFC-enabled devices which will alert them when their next dose is due.
- Malkyrs: Arenas of Eternity (France) – similar to a trading card game, Malkyrs: Arena of Eternity is an interactive prototype game that uses NFC to enable 'cards' to evolve over time. Players log onto the game using NFC and then, by simply tapping their character or power cards on the NFC tag, can play with others. The NFC technology also allows changes in the features of the games' characters so that they can evolve as Malkyrs: Arena of Eternity is played, bringing new dimensions to the game and its ensuing battles.
- NFC Tag Encryption (Vietnam) – this application helps users encrypt selected files on their NFC-enabled device in order to protect sensitive data. The encryption keys are stored off the device in an NFC tag.
- NFC YouTube (Singapore) – NFC tags store specific URL and time stamp data so that users can switch from watching YouTube on a mobile device to a laptop or tablet and resume watching seamlessly.
- NFC Secured Synchronization (Singapore) – By establishing a connection via NFC this application allows data between two devices, such as laptops or tablets, to be securely synchronized over WiFi.
