ARA BIOGEARS(R) OPEN SOURCE HUMAN PHYSIOLOGY ENGINE SHOWCASE AT IMSH 2015

NEW ORLEANS, Jan. 8, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- INTERNATIONAL MEETING ON SIMULATION IN HEALTHCARE (IMSH) – From January 10-14, 2015 Applied Research Associates (ARA, www.ara.com) is showcasing BioGears® (www.biogearsengine.com) at IMSH 2015 in the government agency R &D Exhibit Showcase, Booth C. IMSH 2015 is the 15th annual premier educational and networking event for healthcare simulation professionals from all disciplines.

BioGears® delivers an open source, comprehensive, extensible human physiology engine that serves as a platform for biomedical modeling research and also facilitates the creation of immersive medical education and training technologies. At IMSH, the BioGears® team will interact with over 2,000 professionals from around the globe who will see the latest in technology advancements, attend hands-on workshops and explore professional development opportunities.

The IMSH showcase will inform the public regarding developments within the military medical simulation community, and demonstrate the utility of BioGears® to civilian and military healthcare training professionals. The current release of BioGears® is available for download via an Apache 2.0 open source license and can be used for commercial product development and both government and academic research efforts. If you are interested in the BioGears® program and plan to attend IMSH 2015, please stop by our booth or contact us to set up a meeting with our team.

In October 2014, the BioGears® Mini Build was released to the public. The current version of the software includes cardiovascular and respiratory system models, a range of virtual patient insults, interventions, and assessments, and full documentation. BioGears® also provides an API for real-time retrieval of accurate physiology state that allows for easy integration with both immersive medical simulation software and manikins.

In the Fall of 2015, the BioGears® team will release a software Beta build which will be a whole body simulation comprised of multiple system-level models, including cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, energy balance, endocrine, environment, and substance transport. It will also include Pharmacokinetic/Pharmacodyanmic (PK/PD) and gas exchange models, assessments such as blood and urine panels, electrocardiogram (ECG), and a Pulmonary Function Test (PFT). Following the Beta release, the BioGears® team will hold a free conference in the Raleigh-Durham, NC area to discuss model extensions with the user community, exhibit research projects that use BioGears®, and provide tutorials for content developers, integrators, and modelers.

BioGears® is a $7M, multi-year program funded by the Defense Medical Research Development Program (DMRDP) and administered by the U.S. Army's Telemedicine & Advanced Technology Research Center (TATRC), Armed Forces Simulation Institute for Medicine (AFSIM), under USAMRMC award number W81XWH-13-2-0068.
