Layoffs fall 9 percent in December, 2014 saw fewest cuts since 1997

The number of planned layoffs by U.S. employers fell 9.2 percent in December, capping off a year that saw the fewest job cuts since 1997, according to a report by Challenger, Gray & Christmas.

Employers planned to cut 32,640 jobs in December, just below the 35,940 layoffs the previous month and the third lowest monthly total for 2014.
